About the camera map

This map shows 15 community-reported automated license plate reader (ALPR) locations inside Surry County. It is not a complete or independently verified camera inventory. Reports may be missing, mistaken, duplicated, moved or out of date.

Colors and labels

  • Blue marks cameras reported as Lowe’s cameras. The group of three near Mount Airy and the group of two near Elkin are identified by local community information supplied to Surry for Privacy on September 30, 2026. One of the two Elkin reports also carries a Lowe’s operator tag in OpenStreetMap. These are attributed reports, not independent confirmation by Lowe’s.
  • Orange marks the other ALPR reports. Their operators have not been established by the map source data. An orange marker does not, by itself, establish that a camera belongs to the Sheriff’s Office.
  • Numbers group nearby reports for readability. The two adjacent Elkin-area reports are grouped as one blue circle labeled “2,” matching the blue “3” group near Mount Airy. Group markers are placed at the mean of the reports’ projected positions; original coordinates are preserved in the downloadable data.
  • The labeled Riverside Drive report is OpenStreetMap node 14195744801 (opens in a new tab), at latitude 36.5359402, longitude -80.5820792. It was already present in the original map data and remains in the refreshed records. The September 30, 2026 DeFlock screenshot identifies the same node at rounded coordinates 36.53594, -80.58208; the label makes it easier to find without adding a duplicate.

The Mount Airy Lowe’s group contains node 13320798401 (opens in a new tab), node 13321002701 (opens in a new tab) and node 13321002801 (opens in a new tab). The Elkin-area Lowe’s group contains node 13321007701 (opens in a new tab) and node 13337434402 (opens in a new tab). Original OpenStreetMap tags are preserved in the downloadable data; additional labels identify their separate attribution source.

The East Pine Street report is node 13316536301 (opens in a new tab), at latitude 36.5131484, longitude -80.5672098. The Mount Airy label has been moved so this marker is visible. Its road name agrees with OpenStreetMap way 345051875 in the saved road geometry.

Sources and dates

The geographic base uses the county’s published boundary geometry (opens in a new tab) and municipality boundaries (opens in a new tab). Roads, town positions and camera reports come from © OpenStreetMap contributors under the Open Database License (opens in a new tab).

Camera reports were refreshed from the public OpenStreetMap Overpass API on September 30, 2026, local time. The returned data timestamp is October 1, 2026 at 00:09:03 UTC (September 30 at 8:09:03 p.m. Eastern). All 15 standard ALPR reports inside the county were present, with the same IDs and coordinates as the earlier snapshot. The geographic base, including roads and boundaries, remains the September 23, 2026 snapshot. This checks the current map records, not cameras in the field.

Camera reports were selected by the OpenStreetMap tags man_made=surveillance and surveillance:type=ALPR, then limited to points inside the county’s published boundary. Three northern reports outside that boundary were excluded: OSM nodes 12980663181, 13320990301 and 14170368301. The OpenStreetMap tag surveillance=public describes the area being watched; it does not establish government ownership.

DeFlock is a separate, community-maintained service. Its live map can differ from this dated snapshot. Neither map establishes a camera’s current working status, agency access or network-sharing arrangements.

Broader Flock-tag check

A broader query also checked records with Flock manufacturer tags, including records that use different ALPR/camera tags. It returned six additional reports inside Surry County. Each is approximately 4–54 metres from an already displayed report with a similar direction. They may be duplicate reports, but that has not been independently established. They are preserved in a separate supplemental file, with original tags, nearest-report IDs and approximate distances. They have not been silently merged or counted as six additional physical cameras.

The main map includes all 15 in-county reports matching man_made=surveillance and surveillance:type=ALPR in the refreshed dataset. This is a current OpenStreetMap comparison using the standard DeFlock-style ALPR tags, not a guarantee that every real camera is reported or a record-by-record certification of DeFlock’s live cache.
